Scam Likelihood: Varies
Due to the vast number of accidents happening on the road everyday, the probability of an accident being staged is very low, but there are clues to be found when an accident is deliberate.
The Story:
You are driving on your way home, cursing the car in front to drive faster or move to the outside lane. Slowly, you inch up behind the car hoping that he will be considerate and move out of the way.
Just then, for no reason, he braked unexpectedly hard. You braked hard, but without a sufficient gap, your car hit his.
Both you and the driver came down to access the situation. It is just a light collision and the impact wasn't strong enough to cause any major damage. However, the upset driver continued to argue with you for a compensation and reprimanded you in every way possible.
The Catch:
As you reasoned with the driver, all of a sudden, your car moved and sped off! You turned to face the driver, but he too, had got into his car and cruised away.
Unmistakably, you had been robbed; the scammers had snatched your car.
The Shield:
Accidents happen, so there is no point in raising the point of driving cautiously here, especially when the scammers went out of their way to scam you. However, there are certain things that can be done to avoid falling for such scams.
1) Always kill the engine before you leave the car.
2) Always keep an eye out for your car. In some case, it may simply be a theft.
3) Avoid checking out your car in deserted areas. If the area is isolated, you can always direct the other party to a safer location, such as police station, petrol kiosk, etc. However, many car snatchers aren't afraid to snatch the car even in crowded areas.
The key here is to avoid leaving your car unattended. Protect yourself, and your car.
