Scam Likelihood: 90%

The Story:

You were walking on the streets or sitting in your favourite Mamak place and a fellow approached you to sell you a phone that he apparently just stole from a car or a phone shop. He claimed the phone to be one of the lastest model and is selling it to you for an extremely low price.

Finding yourself such a good bargain, you decided to take out your wallet and pay for the phone.

The Catch:

The phone turns out to be a cheap mimicry of the original high end device.

After you happily bought the phone, you brought it home and showed it to your children. Immediately, they realised that phone is a cheap imitation from China. The touch screen doesn't work properly and the phone is trash.

You tried to contact the seller, but he is long gone and so is your money.

The Shield:

DO NOT buy phone from any random person, especially if he claimed that it is a stolen good.

1) It is against the law to buy stolen goods.
2) The phone might be password protected and can be tracked by the owner. As phones get more advanced, there are a large number of phones which can be tracked after they are stolen.
3) It is unlikely that a legitimate high end device will be sold at a stooping low price, unless there are problems with it. The thief can easily resell the phone at any second-hand phone shop for a better price.
