Telephone Lottery Scam

Scam Likelihood: 100%

The Story:

You received a call and the caller congrats you on winning the lottery in a country abroad. After confirming your identity, the "lottery officials" now explained that in order for them to transfer the money overseas, they will require a processing fee and attempt to extract a payment and/or bank details on the spot.

Overwhelmed by joy, you decided to make the transfer of payment at the bank immediately and provide them with your bank details.

The Catch:

The prize money was never credited to your bank account.

Surprised by the turn of event, you called the "lottery officials" and the explanations they provided were that the transfer is still under process and/or a 2nd processing fee is required.

Only after contacting the lottery organisation through their official telephone number/email, you were informed that you had fallen for one of the lottery scams.

The Shield:

HANG UP immediately if you received a call congratulating on your winning or triumphant.

No organisation, unless specified during your participation, will attempted to inform about your winning through email or telephone. This is especially true for lottery since any uncollected amount will mean that it is forfeited by the winner after 6 months (in Malaysia's Big Sweep), resulting in more profit for the company.
